  16. What is OTTool?
  17. OTTool is a free utility which provides a synopsis of the AppleTalk and IP
  18. configuration parameters within Apple Computer's Open Transport networking
  19. architecture.  In addition, OTTool allows users on IP networks to make
  20. Domain Name Server (DNS) queries, ping devices using ICMP Pings, trace
  21. IP routes (UNIX traceroute), scan through ranges of IP addresses asking
  22. for resolutions, and to query a DNS for Mail Exchange and System Info.  This
  23. is a beta version of OTTool and we would like to hear your suggestions and
  24. comments regarding the software.  Please send your feedback to

  27. What changed in OTTool since version 1.0ß3?
  28. We received a lot of suggestions for improving OTTool from users. With
  29. version 1.0ß4, we

  31. • implemented the UNIX traceroute functionality
  32. • added a unique IP address "scanning" feature for
  33.   exploring ranges of IP addresses or domain names
  34. • allow DNS query for System Info and Mail Exchange Info

  38. AppleTalk and IP Configuration Parameters
  39. When launched, OTTool gathers the AppleTalk and IP network configuration
  40. parameters from your Macintosh and displays them in the OTTool window. The
  41. AppleTalk parameters are on the left side of the window and the IP
  42. parameters are on the right.  The following network information is retrieved:

  65. ICMP Ping dialog
  66. ---------------
  67. At the top of the ICMP Ping dialog is a set of three editable parameters
  68. contained within the following sentence:  "Send [A] packets with [B]
  69. second(s) interpacket delay waiting no more than [C] second(s) for a
  70. reply." [A] is the number of ICMP packets to send to the device,
  71. [B] is the number of seconds between each packet that is sent, and [C] is the
  72. number of seconds that OTTool should wait before considering a packet
  73. lost.

  75. Once you have set variables A, B, and C to your liking, click the Start
  76. button to begin pinging the device. As OTTool is pinging the device, the
  77. following real time information is displayed in the lower portion of the
  78. ICMP Ping dialog:

  96. TraceRoute window
  97. ------------------
  98. OTTool implements UNIX traceroute functionality. After typing an IP
  99. address or domain name, press the Trace button. This will cause the
  100. TraceRoute window to be displayed. Each IP router through which data
  101. to the selected IP address or domain name will be displayed preceded
  102. by a hop count. For each hop, OTTool sends three packets, so up to three
  103. IP addresses (one for each router) may appear for each hop. After the
  104. trace has completed, double-clicking on any displayed address will
  105. bring up the OTTool Ping dialog, and ICMP pinging will commence,
  106. as described above. Also, to copy a domain name (if available) or an
  107. IP address from the TraceRoute window to the scrapbook, select the
  108. domain name or IP address, and select Copy from the Edit menu.

  110. Scan Address window
  111. -------------------
  112. OTTool allows domain name resolutions to be made for a range of
  113. IP addresses. After typing an IP address or domain name, press the
  114. Scan button. This will cause the Scan Addresses window to be
  115. displayed. IP addresses will appear five at a time, in ascending
  116. order, and a reverse DNS query will be made for their domain name.
  117. To query for domain names in descending order, hold down the Option
  118. key and press the Scan button. Scanning IP addresses is a good way to
  119. test domain name servers and to explore Internet sites. To cancel
  120. the scanning process, press the Apple key and period, at the same
  121. time. After the scan has completed, double-clicking on any displayed
  122. address will bring up the OTTool Ping dialog, and ICMP pinging will
  123. commence, as described above. Also, to copy a domain name (if
  124. available) or an IP address from the Scan Address window to the
  125. scrapbook, select the domain name or IP address, and select Copy
  126. from the Edit menu.

  128. Mail Exchange/SysInfo dialog
  129. --------------------------
  130. OTTool allows queries of Domain Name Servers for standard
  131. Mail Exchange and System Information for a given domain name.
  132. After typing an IP address or domain name, press the MX button.
  133. This will cause the Mail Exchange/SysInfo dialog to be displayed. 
  134. Note that this information may not be available for the domain
  135. name selected as not all Domain Name Servers have been configured
  136. with this information.
